Vickie Bobbitt is the founder and Executive Director of the organization I.C.A.R.E. (Intergenerational Clearinghouse and Resource Educational Center). My husband enlisted in the United States Army for twenty years. As a young military family, we were stationed at several military facilities throughout the United States and overseas. Our last duty stationed was at Fort Riley, Kansas. Through our journey, the realization was that our two children missed most of the connections and relationships with their grandparents and other extended family members throughout their military childhood life span. In 2007, a vision of connecting generations was shared with two members in our community. Together, the three of us compiled an assessment of the community for a need for an intergenerational center. The vision was later shared at a Community Connection Coalition Meeting in Junction City.
Established as a 501c (3) organization in 2009 (I.C.A.R.E.) became a grassroot organization that seeks to build positive relationships between youth and older adults through intergenerational interaction. I.C.A.R.E. coordinates activities with several elementary, secondary schools, and youth groups in our local Geary County Community.
Our intergenerational innovative program will promote education & social development through various programs with students K-12th grade and senior older adults in the community. Our strategic planning consists of educational and research-based curricula, community collaboration of caring volunteers, and support from local organizations

In addition, there is also some emphasis placed on bridging in-school and out-of-school STEM learning opportunities. What separates STEM from the traditional science and math education is the “blended learning” environment and showing students how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. Having activities that show real-life implication of STEM can pull together the ideas presented in school and help to show how they benefit our society and even our world as a whole.
